Lionel Messi in Paris (2021–2023)

Arriving on a free transfer in August 2021 after more than two decades at FC Barcelona, Lionel Messi spent two seasons at Paris Saint-Germain, forming a major attacking trio with Neymar and Kylian Mbappé and helping the club win two Ligue 1 titles before leaving in summer 2023.

Arrival

In August 2021, Lionel Messi joined Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer, bringing to an end more than twenty years of his career at FC Barcelona. His move to the French capital was a landmark moment for the club and for European football: a player of his stature arriving in French football brought increased profile and heightened sporting expectations.

First season: adaptation and impact

The 2021–2022 season was one of adaptation. Messi discovered a new tactical environment and a team built around high ambitions in the domestic league and in European competition. Upon his arrival, he reunited with Neymar, a partner from past seasons, and quickly developed a relationship with Kylian Mbappé. The attacking trio Neymar–Messi–Mbappé became one of the symbols of the squad, capable of offering creativity, pace and finishing.

On the sporting side, Messi brought his football intelligence, his ability to create chances and his quality of passing. His presence altered opponents’ defensive balances and provided new options for PSG’s attacking play. While periods of adjustment and physical setbacks marked his first months, his role within the team remained central, particularly in major league matches.

Two seasons, two titles

During the two seasons he wore the PSG shirt (2021–22 and 2022–23), the club won the Ligue 1 title twice. These domestic successes confirmed PSG’s national dominance during this period. Messi contributed through his influence on the collective play and through decisive performances on several occasions.

Beyond the league, the European ambition remained at the heart of expectations: the club targeted the UEFA Champions League, an objective shared by supporters and the management. While the continental campaigns did not yield the longed-for title, Messi’s presence strengthened PSG’s reputation and competitiveness on the international stage.

The Neymar–Messi–Mbappé trio

The offensive partnership between Neymar, Messi and Mbappé was the most striking image of this Parisian chapter. Each brought different qualities: technique and creativity for Neymar, game vision and finishing for Messi, and speed and efficiency for Mbappé. Together, they represented a constant threat to opposing defenses and drew media and sporting attention to the club.

However, housing three stars required tactical adjustments and careful squad management. Rotations, injuries and coaching choices influenced the trio’s simultaneous availability, which sometimes affected the consistency of collective performances.

Departure for Inter Miami

In the summer of 2023, Lionel Messi left Paris Saint-Germain to join Inter Miami. His spell in Paris ended after two seasons marked by domestic titles and by the imprint he left on the team and the club. His departure opened a new chapter for PSG, which had to rethink its sporting direction and its attacking structure.

Assessment

Messi’s time at PSG was characterized by a dual reality: an evident contribution in terms of playing quality, aura and domestic titles, and a persistent quest for a European accomplishment that remained unfinished. On both human and sporting levels, his stay left strong images — of a top-level player adapting to a new chapter of his career while helping to keep PSG at the top of French football.
